Final Year Students 2006

Hwee Lee Wee

I'm a final year student engineering student majoring in electrical and electronics. I'm from Singapore and had been studying in UWA for the last 3 years. My project with OBEL involves enhancing pulse oximetry signal acuqisition and signal processing. I enjoy having a stroll in the park or along the beach and listening to music. I have a pet rabbit, Navy, which I adore very much.

Rohan Joyce

Rohan is final year Electrical Engineering/Computer Science student. His project aims to create an easier to use, more reliable, and more efficient way of acquiring images from one of the OCT systems present at OBEL.

In his spare time, of which there appears to be ever dwindling quantities of, Rohan enjoys watching movies, visiting the occasional pub, reading, and is somewhat of a computer hobbyist.

Migara Alles

I am in the final year of a combined Commerce/Engineering course. My project involves the measurement of refractive index of human breast tissue, to see if this index changes significantly between cancerous and healthy tissue, using OCT. It should be quite fun and hopefully I will be able to see plenty of blood and guts as the test tissue is being removed from the human at Sir Charles Gardiner Hospital.

In my time away from the photonics lab, I enjoy playing basketball, boxing, listening to music, playing poker and other such ‘chillaxing’ activities. I also ‘enjoy’ throwing a copious proportion of my meagre personal income towards my car – a Nissan 300ZX.

Michael Davis

I am in the final year of a double degree majoring in electrical engineering and pharmacology. My final year project with OBEL will involve looking at optical clearing agents and two-photon microscopy, with an aim to quantify and examine the effects and dynamics of clearing agents in tissue samples. I enjoy playing football (soccer) and basketball and also play the piano every now and then to relax...

Thomas Facius

Tom is a biomedical engineering student with a science major in physiology. Tom's project is concerned with optical clearing agents and the molecular mechanism behind their effect in multi-photon and second harmonic generation images of skeletal muscle and collagen tissue.

Outside of uni Tom enjoys basketball and squash, and is a keen guitarist and songwriter. In fact, an Engineering/Science degree was just a good way to pass the time until the music world wakes up and realises that Tom is what its all about.

Joseph Lor

My name is Joseph Lor and I am currently doing my final year of a double major in biomedical science and electrical engineering. My project aims to further understand the capabilities of the OCT system to image muscle, specifically the diagnosis of muscular dystrophy in skeletal muscle. I enjoy participating in sporting activities such as basketball, tennis, table tennis, badminton, soccer, touch rugby, rugby, ultimate frisbee etc. I also draw/illustrate/paint a lot and I like singing, playing the guitar and piano.

Joceline Lukman

Joceline is a final year Engineering/Science student majoring in Electrical & Electronic Engineering and Mathematical Sciences. Her project aims to investigate the characteristics of a simple dermatoscope and observe optical features which allow for easier identification of lesion diagnostic factors. Joceline is a fisherman at heart who enjoys travelling and fine-dining. Her spare time is consumed with shopping, music (violin & saxophone) and spending time with those closest to her.

Dirk Schneiderheinze

Dirk’s project aims to develop a theoretical model to simulate optical coherence tomography of biological tissue. He initially studied music however made the mistake of switching degrees halfway through. In his spare time he enjoys scuba diving and playing the violin and piano, having attained a licentiate diploma in performance for the latter.

Loretta Scolaro

I am in my final year of a Biomedical Science/Engineering degree majoring in biochemistry and electrical engineering. I will be completing the design and construction of the portable OCT sample arm for my final year project with OBEL and will be incorporating image co-registration into the design. When I’m not busy studying or completing assignments and project work I enjoy reading books of all genres, from the classics of Jane Austen to science-fiction and fantasy. I also enjoy tae-kwon do training and spending time with my sisters and friends and am interested in languages and traveling.

Ming See

Ming is a final year engineering and commerce student majoring in mechatronics engineering, investment finance and corporate finance. His project with OBEL revolves around the design and optimisation of a refractive index biopsy needle. He likes to bum around and play computer games, golf and badminton. His idea of a perfect day is a day which does not involves study of any sort. He likes travelling and going to new eating places to sample unique culinary delights with his friends and family.

Sabrina Wong

Sabrina is her final year of Engineering and Commerce; her Engineering major is Software and her Commerce double majors are Management and Human Resource Management. Her project with OBEL is to develop software to process data (gathered using OCT) for the purpose of tissue imaging and gathering blood flow information. Sabrina likes cats. She enjoys playing euro-style board games, webdesign, karaoke and watching movies at half-price. Much to the detriment of her health, she likes to eat cake. Thankfully, this does not occur often.

William Wong

I am currently a final year Engineering/Science student majoring in E&EE and Anatomy and Human Biology. My project at OBEL will involve the determination of the piezoelectric properties of collagen, from bone and tendon, and its potential to be developed into an audio transducer. Aside from the joyous moments uni provides, I also enjoy playing badminton, running, swimming, lounging around the tv, and hanging with friends. Oh yeah, travelling is also good, now just to wait until uni finishes.
