OBEL wins SPIE Start-up Challenge business pitch competition

OBEL’s microscope-in-a-needle research recently won the SPIE Start-up Challenge in San Francisco, USA. Run by SPIE, the competition invites researchers to present a 3 minute business pitch of their work. The Competition is held at Photonics West, the world’s largest laser and photonics conference and trade show, with over 20,000 attendees. ‘3 Minute Thesis’ win for OBEL PhD student, Kelsey Kennedy

Congratulations to PhD student Kelsey Kennedy, who recently competed in the Trans-Tasman 3 Minute Thesis Competition in Sydney. Not only did she make it through to the final round of the competition, but she also won it. And, to top it all off, she received the People’s Choice Award as well. Great job, Kelsey. Best Poster Image Prize for Peijun Gong at this year’s Combined Biological Sciences Meeting

Congratulations to Peijun Gong for winning a student prize at this year’s Combined Biological Sciences Meeting. Peijun is a PhD student in the Optical + Biomedical Engineering Laboratory, and is developing new methods to assess human burns scars using optical coherence tomography (OCT). His poster described a method to measure the differences between burns scars and normal tissue by quantifying the attenuation rate of near infrared light. Kelsey Kennedy, a PhD student at the UWA Optical + Biomedical Engineering Lab, will take on the world’s best young speakers in the global final of the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s Present around the World (PATW) 2013 competition after winning the Asia-Pacific Regional competition in Brunei last week.
